Obituary of Lawrence E. Cannon

Lawrence Edward Cannon, 92, of Stratford, passed away peacefully on April 8 surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 14, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Mary (Reilly) Cannon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Emma Claire (Cavalluzzo) Cannon. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy in the North Atlantic during World War II. He was assigned to a destroyer as the communications specialist. He retired from The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company where he worked for 38 years. Larry was a man devoted to his faith in God, and he lived life following those principles. He was an accomplished runner, competing against Jesse Owens leading up to the 1936 Summer Olympics. Larry was also an avid reader, enthusiastic dancer, and had a love for the arts, especially music. He was also an ardent sports fan, especially for the New York Yankees. Larry was a first generation American with an Irish heritage to which anything Irish was preferred, and he accompanied his Mother to the familys town of origin, Ballinasloe, Ireland, where his grandfather had built the Catholic Church. His great pride in life was his family, always putting them ahead of himself, typically greeting them with a smile and sending them off with a hug and a kiss. He encouraged family and friends alike to work hard and do their best. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his children, Patricia Yanosy and husband John, Lawrence Cannon and wife Mary, Dolores Connor and husband Joseph Triano, Christopher Cannon and wife Kate, Kevin Cannon and wife Elaine, Elizabeth Crosby and husband David, a sister, Irene Lavin, grandchildren John, Michael, Keith, Jason, Faith, Ethan, Sean, Kathryn, Nicholas, Christian, and David, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, John, and ten brothers and sisters. Funeral Information A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford, CT.
