Obituary of Robert T. Keeley, Sr.

Robert Thomas Keeley, Sr., age 91, of Bridgeport passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Virginia Reilly Keeley. Born in Bridgeport, on September 29, 1922, he was a son of the late James and Josephine Clark Keeley. Mr. Keeley was a Lieutenant for the City of Bridgeport Police Department before his retirement in 1976 with over 30 years of dedicated service. Robert graduated Sacred Heart Grammar School in 1936 and Bassick High School in 1940. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having served in the Battle of the Bulge. His faith was strong and evident as he was a parishioner of Our Lady of Assumption Church in Fairfield and also past president of the Holy Name Society there. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Gaelic American Club and the Bridgeport Police Benevolent Association. He was considered a baseball star while growing up in the south end of Bridgeport and his long tradition of watching major sporting events with his family will be carried on, especially his fondness for New York sporting teams, namely, the Yankees, Giants and Knicks. He was also a huge UConn fan of both Men’s and Women’s basketball. His greatest accomplishments however, will be being remembered as a great son, brother, uncle, loving husband and father and grandfather. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. His wife and children will always remember him singing 'Pennies From Heaven' around the house and he loved looking forward to getting ready for a family dinner. In addition to his beloved wife of 66 years, Virginia, other survivors include his children, Robert T. Keeley, Jr. of Bridgeport and Mary Jo Keeley of Trumbull, his six cherished grandchildren, Ryan R. Keeley, Kara K. Greenwood, Mary Jo R. Greenwood, Meghan E. Greenwood, Virginia C. Greenwood and Keeley A. Greenwood, all of Trumbull, a brother, Thomas Keeley and his wife Betty and a sister, Margaret Bradbury, both of AZ, and several nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by a brother, James “Bud” Keeley, Jr and a sister, Ethel Pond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. directly in Our Lady of Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Rd., Fairfield. Interment will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Easton.
