Obituary of Hazel C. Harkins

Hazel Vaughn Harkins, age 93, of Trumbull and formerly of Vero Beach, FL, beloved wife of the late Eugene Harkins, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013 in St. Josephs Manor. Born in Rockledge, GA on March 6, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Eula Harp. When Hazel was very young she started work as a nurse in Vero Beach, FL helping doctors in delivering babies and caring for the sick. When her children were young she started working in Vero Beachs upscale restaurants, the Ocean Grille and Patio Restaurant as a manager and maitre d' for the Ralph Sextant Family for over 50 years. She was a very generous and loving woman who was happiest when helping her children and others. She loved to cook and especially make her key lime and peanut butter pies and not to mention her rum cakes. Later in life she moved to Trumbull, CT, residing at St. Josephs Manor for the past 11 years, to be near her daughter Deanna but never forgetting her love of family and friends in Florida. Survivors include two children, Deanna Ouimette and her husband Don of Trumbull and Otho Vaughn of Sebastian, FL, six grandchildren, Debbie Vaughn Kemper and her husband Dan, Crissy Vaughn Jacobetti and her husband Nick, Michael Ouimette and his wife Lorina, Michele Ouimette Blakeslee and her husband Terry, Denise Ouimette Ruggiero and her husband Michael and Paul Ouimette and his wife Kellie, seven great grandchildren, Logan, Bryce, Julie, Cody, Collin, Julia and Ryan, nieces and nephews, Mary Garmany of GA, Dorothy Smith, Melba Wolventon, Joann and Linda McEwan, Louis and Billy Harp, Bobby and Amy Harp, all of Florida, very close friends, Ralph Sexton who she worked for many years at the Ocean Grille and Patio Restaurant in Vero Beach, FL, Liz Tamarkin and children, friends at St. Josephs Manor, Deacon Tim Sullivan, Bill Benedetto, David Lauria and all the staff at St. Josephs. She was pre-deceased by siblings, Olive McEwan, Grace Smith, Revere, Glynn and Jewell Harp. Funeral Information A Memorial Gathering celebrating her life will take place on Thursday, December 5, 2013 from 2-4 pm at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. A Memorial Service will also take place at a date and time to be announced at St. Josephs Manor.
