Very sad hearing about the passing of Corny. I also grew up on the East Side of Bridgeport. Like so many others, I had the honor to play for him. Loved every minute. It was due to the selfless efforts of Corny and so many like him who not only taught us about baseball but about life as well. How to struggle through adversity? I remember an event well. Today I am 68 yrs old and this happened when I was 15. It was a game at Seaside Park. I, and unfortunately the team, were getting hammered 17-0 due to my poor pitching performance. It was only the fourth inning. Finally getting the third out, I walked over to Corny awaiting the onslaught of a well-deserved verbal tirade regarding my lack of performance. It never came. He simply looked me in the eye and said, calmly and simply, “When you finish throwing batting practice and want to pitch, there’s eight other guys out there to help.” I’ve never forgotten this character building event. In effect, he was telling me to stop feeling sorry for myself and do the job! Over the years when I became a three-sport coach on the high school and semi-pro levels, I thought of those who coached us over the years and asked, what would this or that coach do in each situation. I thought of only one coach when it came to character building of my players. Many of us have benefited from your guidance. Thank you Corny.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Corny's passing. Our loss is God's gain, for I'm sure God has a coaching job lined up. Corny was a man who cared for and loved kids and baseball with a passion. Great memories come to mind. He drove me and my friend, Stas Wolpiuk, to many of our games when our families could not. Corny treated us like one of his own kids, taking us to MSG to watch UCLA (Lew Alcindor) play Boston College (Jack Kvancz) - an unforgettable experience! I'll never forget the way he gave his time, his money, and himself to all the kids, and I'll always remember my friendship with him.

There's no doubt about it: Ed Cornwell is a unanimous, first-round ballot inductee into the all-time Outstanding Sportsman Hall of Fame. No one has done as much as he did, as long as he did while not making a red cent but instead spent his own money in support of youth and adult amateur baseball and basketball. The late great New Haven Register and Conn. Post sports columnist, George Wadley, summed it up best in a 1999 article that ran in the Post: "There isn't a greater baseball man in the state - maybe that's too narrow a geographical limit - than Eddie Cornwell, who spent half a century managing, coaching and running amateur teams." And Corny had another 18 years of active participation after the article was printed and kept on going until his final days. Corny not only won many baseball and basketball games but was a bigger winner in the game of life. All this from a kid from humble beginnings from Bridgeport's East End who was declared too small for varsity sports by Harding's team doctor. Corny's managing days might be over down here but he's busy making up the lineups upstairs. What time is it up there? "IT'S TIME TO PLAY BALL."

Nancy, and family, friends, 'Old Timers', past Royal players, share our sincere condolences. It now is our time to reflect and remember his selfless giving, and concern for all of our well being a lifetime. His anecdotes, and stories were bountiful, always working to inspire in us a ' can do ' spirit, at all levels. Even if you weren't the star player, he stressed the importance of teamwork, and contributing in a positive way. His devotion to family, country, community, bear the fruits of his labors,' all of us', he touched in life. May he rest in peace, and suffer no more, and keep a watchful spirit over all of us, as we commemorate his memory eternally . Sincerely, Ken, Charlie, Jack, Aggie, Bruno, and Family
